Work-life balance is the equilibrium between your personal life and your responsibilities at work. In our fast-paced society, many people are crying out desperately for work-life balance. As parents, the desire for this balance seems even more like a faraway dream.
However, this article is going to make it a reality for you! Follow these 7 tips and work towards your ideal work-life balance.
Why is work-life balance important?
Work-life balance is one of the key factors of a healthy work environment. Respecting employees and their time is important as it shows that the company respects the employees and their personal engagements. It allows employees to take a break from work and accomplish other things in their free time.
This helps to reduce stress and prevents workplace burnout. In order for the company to function at an optimal level, it has to respect its employees and provide time for them to rest. This will keep the morale of the company up high even when times are stressful.
It is a win-win situation on both sides. The employees will be less stressed and happier and the company will have a productive workforce that will continue to do their best for the company.
Therefore, work-life balance is important for individuals to ensure progress not only in their career but in their personal lives as well. Having more space between work and private life provides space and time for parents to thrive in their careers without sacrificing their life at home. Follow these tips because being successful in the workplace doesn’t always have to come at the cost of your family!
Best tips to have a healthy work-life balance
#1 What is your perfect balance?
Different individuals lead different lives and therefore have different needs. Your ideal work-life balance may differ greatly from your colleague or your boss. Therefore, it is important for you to think about what your perfect balance is. With all your commitments in and outside of work, what configuration would be the best for you?
Once you’ve worked that out, you will understand your needs better and you can think of ways to satisfy them subsequently.
#2 Create “protected time” outside work
During the stressful season, there may be times when you are made to work overtime or you are contacted outside work hours. As much as being a responsible worker is important, your own personal time is important as well.
To help you to be fully present with your family or other important people and events in your life, schedule a time where you will not deal with anything related to work. This is to ensure that you have time out of work, achieving some balance instead of devoting all your time and energy to your work.
#3 Do something you like and do it often!
There are always so many things to do and so many people to care for and spend time with that we tend to forget that we matter too! It is important to take care of our mental and emotional health even when you get busy.
One way to do so is to do something you like as a reward or motivation for yourself. It might be something as small as taking a walk in your favourite park or sleeping in on Sundays. These small simple gestures you do for yourself is a way to care for yourself in the midst of all your responsibilities.
#4 Find ways to be productive with the limited time
If you cannot increase your number of hours, you can try your best to save time! Instead of sticking to a routine because that has been the way you have been doing things, think about what changes you can make to help you maximise your time.
It can be simple changes such as searching for a faster travel route home from work or subscribing to a meal plan to save the time needed for you to cook. These small changes can make big changes to your life as it is able to simplify your life and the number of things you have to do.
#5 Prioritise
There just isn’t enough time! Hence, you will have to prioritise and complete the most urgent tasks first. This is not just pertaining to work but in your personal life as well. Look at your life as a whole and think about your priorities. Make sure you set your priorities straight so that you can arrange your schedule according to your priorities.
Knowing your priorities can help you feel less overwhelmed as you will know what you have to focus on and slowly conquer the tasks step by step.
#6 Learn to unplug
It is important to learn how to let go and unplug. No matter how stressed you are about work or the family, there are times you just have to learn to switch off and stop worrying about them. Worries can be endless and if you continue to allow it to manifest in your life, it will result in chronic stress and anxiety.
To prevent that from happening, learn to know when to stop worrying and just try your best to relax.
#7 Talk to someone
The stress or anger or anxiety that you are feeling is valid so talk about it! Sometimes talking to someone you trust can help you sort out your feelings and view them in a more objective manner. This allows you to slowly identify the ways in which you can cope with it.
Talk to your boss or colleagues about the stress you have been feeling and seek help and support from others! By communicating your difficulties it can help other people to look out for you and also allows your superiors to know how they can help you.
Remember that you are not in this alone!
