Now that you’re confined to the four walls of your house, what can you do to keep your children occupied?

\n

Without the option to go out for entertainment, staying home seems boring.

\n

\n\nChildren start to get restless and parents are subjected to higher levels of stress as a result of having to work and monitor their children simultaneously.

\n

\n

Here are some activities to relieve that stress while keeping your children occupied. \n

\n

#1: Your own Private Movie Screening

\n

\"home

\n

\n

All the cinemas are closed but that will not stop you from enjoying a good movie.

\n

\n

Set time aside in the evenings for your whole family to enjoy a movie together. This can help you relax from the full day of work while spending time with your children.

\n

\n

You can even have a movie marathon on the franchise that your family likes.

\n

\n

To make things more exciting, you just have to set the atmosphere:\n

\n
    \n\n\t\n\t
  1. Set up your own cozy movie theatre in your living room by laying out blankets and pillows in front of the television.
  2. \n\t
  3. Pop your own popcorn and buy some snacks.
  4. \n\t
  5. Draw lots to decide on which movies to watch. (We all know that this is a tough decision)
  6. \n\t
  7. Switch off the lights and turn up the volume; your own private movie screening is about to begin!
  8. \n
\n

#2: Develop their Interest in Reading

\n

\"child

\n

Reading is definitely a good habit to cultivate. However, due to constant distractions, it may be difficult to find time to start. This stay-home period seems to be the best time to cultivate your children’s interest in reading.

\n

\n

Parents can read the same books as their children and talk to them about it. Not only does this help them process and express their thoughts, it is also a good opportunity to generate shared experiences and conversation topics.

\n

\n

Besides being entertained, it is a good way to keep the children still and quiet while you work. \nIf your child is not interested in chapter books, it is easy to find short articles online in his or her area of interest!

\n

\n

For instance, you can look for some kid-friendly locally-written articles on What’s Up. Do not worry if your child is averse to reading at first, encourage them by choosing something of their interest and read it together with them.

\n

 #3: The Classic Board Games

\n

\"Family

\n

With the amount of time your child has spent staring at their screens during this stay-home period, you are probably starting to worry about your child’s eyesight.

\n

\n

Instead of playing computer games or watching television, play some classic board games with them.

\n

\n

Unlike digital games, board games can be played with everyone in the family. They can be just as exciting and competitive. They are also a good break away from electronic devices which making some fun memories with the people you love.

\n

 #4: Do a Puzzle

\n

\"scrambled

\n

This activity may be time-consuming — yet that is exactly the point. Complete a puzzle with your children or give them one to finish amongst themselves.

\n

\n

This will definitely keep them occupied while providing you with some time to complete your tasks. Although puzzles may seem boring at first, pick one with your child's favourite character and allow them to put it up after it is done.

\n

\n

This will increase their motivation to complete it.

\n

 #5: Treasure Hunt

\n

\"treasure

\n

Give your children a treat by planning a treasure hunt for them. Hide an item or gift in the house and provide some clues to help them find it.

\n

\n

This may seem like a tedious task but fret not, as there are treasure hunt templates you can find here.

\n

\n\nAn alternative would be to look for riddles online here and hide them around in the house. The child who can find and solve the most riddles will be the winner.

\n

\n

It is an easy activity that will excite the young ones and keep them moving.

\n

 #6: Masterchef in My Kitchen

\n

\"ingredients

\n

Having to cook most of the meals at home may start to be tiring and boring for mothers.

\n

\n

To make things more fun, why not include everyone in the process? With older children, you can start a MasterChef competition amongst everyone!

\n

\n

Ask them to choose a dish they would like to cook and have them prepare and cook it themselves. \nWhen everyone is done, they can try all the dishes and vote for the tastiest one. A penalty such as doing the dishes can be agreed upon to make things more exciting.

\n

\n

For younger children, give them the opportunity to be your little kitchen helpers while you cook. This way, it can teach them a new skill and be a great family bonding activity.

\n

 #7: Work Out Together

\n

\"Mum

\n

The classic solution to having restless children is to tire them out. During this stay-home period, it is still important to exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

\n

\n

YouTube has many different workouts that can be fun to do with your children. Dance workouts with their favourite songs can hype them up and be a good fitness session for the family.

\n

\n

It will also allow them to exhaust their additional energy while inducing some fun and laughter at the same time!

\n

\n\n\n\tThere are many different activities to start doing at home. With the time given during school holidays, we should not be disappointed about being stuck at home.

\n

\n

Try out these activities, as they will definitely spice up the mundane stay-home routine.

Some people would argue that Secondary School days were some of the best times of their lives as students. If your child is embarking on his/her secondary school journey soon, you should be excited about all the things that will be coming his/her way! This new chapter in your life is going to allow your child to make more friends, learn new things and create unforgettable memories. \n\n

\n

\n

Amidst the excitement, your child may be feeling anxious and worried about his/her new school life. If you're worried on how you can support your child, this article is here to help you! With tips and advice from people who had a wonderful experience during their Secondary School days, you are good to go!

\n

\n

\n

1. Familiarise your child with the shortest route to school

\n

\n

Spending some time to figure out the shortest route to get to school is going to benefit your child for the next four or five years! Choosing the shortest route helps your child to save time and effort. Not only can he/she wake up later in the mornings, he/she will also be able to get home faster in the evenings (after CCA sessions).

\n

\n

Being familiar with the travel route to school includes taking note of how long your child take to travel to school. Sometimes the estimated travel timings given by Google Maps is not entirely accurate. To ensure that your child reaches school on time, you should help to time the actual amount of time your child takes to get to school. I'm sure you will not want your child to stay back for detention!

\n

\n

\n

2. Time management makes a difference

\n

\n

With more subjects and longer school hours, your child will be spending more time in school and more time studying. There are going to be more things on his/her plate so it is important that he/she learns how to manage his/her time well.

\n

\n

Time management means that your child learns how to effectively divide his/her time for different things he/she wants to do. Prioritising urgent tasks is also another part of managing one's time well. Sometimes, you just have so many things to do that you have to pick out the ones that are more urgent. If you don’t do that, you will constantly feel like you have endless things to do.

\n

\n

\n

3. Use the school planner or get your own!

\n

\n

One great way to manage your time is to own a planner! Some schools give out school planners to their students at the beginning of each academic year. If your child has never used them, he/she should start! Planners are a great way to keep track of all the things your child has to do or plans he/she has for the week.

\n

\n

In these planners, remind your child to note down important dates such as deadlines or test dates. Noting them down keeps your child aware of his/her upcoming tests and he/she can prepare for them in advance. \n\n

\n

\n

Writing down CCA timings and additional commitments can help your child to plan his/her time wisely. You will not want your child to be caught in a cycle of doing last-minute work. Not only will that diminish the quality of his/her work and study sessions, it will also be more stressful!

\n

\n

\n

4. Wrap the textbooks, own a file

\n

\n

This suggestion may seem trivial but it can have a significant impact on your child! In secondary school, some of the textbooks will be used for more than a year. Wrapping it will ensure that they are in good condition. With your child's textbooks looking neat, he/she will not be distracted by any folded pages or markings. This will help your child to stay focused when studying.

\n

\n

Keeping a file to store his/her homework and administrative forms ensures that he/she stays organised. There are many students who stuff all their worksheets into their school bags directly. These students are usually the students who have a tougher time keeping track of their things. With a file, your child can look for things easily whenever he/she needs them. It will also be convenient for you to check what homework your child has for the day.

\n

\n

Staying organised be it in keeping your things neat or planning your time is definitely a win for your child! Studies have shown that being organised keeps you focused and motivates you to do work and produce work of higher quality.

\n

\n

\n

5. Encourage your child to make use of orientation to make new friends

\n

\n

Your child's first week as a secondary one student will be spent playing games and participating in activities! Sounds fun right? Encourage your child to not be shy and put yourself out there to make new friends that week.

\n

\n

Orientations organised by schools aim to help students to transition into the new environment by getting to know more about the school and making new friends. This will be one of the only weeks where your child will not be attending classes and studying so let them have fun!

\n

\n

Making friends during orientation builds up your child's support system and helps him/her to feel less alone and lost. Encourage your child to make friends and try out new things together! After all, everyone is new to the school and looking to make friends too.

\n

\n

\n

6. Guide them to choose a CCA they'd enjoy!

\n

\n

Guiding your child to choose a CCA he/she would enjoy is important because your child will be in it for the next four to five years! CCA attendance is important in Secondary School as if your child collates enough points, you will be able to minus one or two points from his/her O-Level L1R4/5 to get into the post-secondary institution of his/her choice.

\n

\n

A CCA your child likes will motivate him/her to go for CCA sessions and have fun during CCA too! CCA can be a big part of your child's secondary school life where he/she picks up new skills and makes new friends.

\n

\n

\n

7. Encourage your child to ask questions and become independent thinkers

\n

\n

Secondary School education is different because pure memorisation is no longer sufficient to excel academically. There will be more application-type questions during exams and tests. This type of question challenges your child to think critically and to apply what your child has learnt.

\n

\n

Encourage your child to ask more questions in class or while he/she is studying prompts him/her to dig deeper into the content that he/she is learning. Train your child to ask questions and seek answers. Forming their own opinions is also important to help them do well in their humanities subjects. As your child grows older, learning how to be an independent thinker also impacts his/her growth and view of the world.

\n

\n

\n

8. Make sure your child revises regularly

\n

\n

Ensure that your child doesn't do any last-minute work or study sessions before his/her exams. Your child may hear of people who study for tests and exams last minute but studies have shown that last-minute cramming sessions will not allow one to retain the memories for long.

\n

\n

With the increase in content from Primary School, it is also more difficult to study within one night. Studying and revising regularly keeps your child on track. It will be easier for him/her to remember what he/she has learnt. It will also be less stressful during the exam revision period as your child already know all the content. All he/she has to do is to revise his/her work and do more exam papers as practice.

\n

Not revising his/her work regularly may cause your child to feel like he/she has too much to do, and may end up being overwhelmed.

\n

\n

\n

9. Ensure your child gets enough sleep

\n

\n

Rest and sleep are very important! Your child is still growing and sleep is needed for your child to grow well and stay healthy.

\n

Getting enough sleep ensures that they have enough energy to go about their school day which includes being attentive in class and active during CCA sessions.

\n

\n

10. Help them to develop a positive attitude!

\n

\n

Staying positive and having a good mindset is important regardless of which stage of our lives we're in! Helo your child to focus on the good side of things in order to cope with stress and stay motivated. There are definitely going to be some difficult moments during their secondary school journey but remember that how your child learns to deal with these problems depends him/her!

At times, after hours and hours of studying, the one question that comes to mind is:

Why?

Why am I studying?

Why am I making myself suffer?

Will you think of giving up and then start to imagine your life for the next 10 years if you fail this exam? When you do that, chances are, you’re wasting precious time. \n\nBut how do you make sure that you’re constantly having that drive to study -- or motivated?

Write Goals

Some of us prefer to pen down thoughts, narrating our experiences at the end of the day. However, you should write more goals, and write them in present tense. You have to be specific about it and keep it accurate and measurable. Instead of writing “My dream is to achieve A in next Mathematics exam”, you can write “90 marks for Mathematics.” You will influence your brain to accept the fact and be more motivated to achieve that goal.

Imagine It

It’s a trick to heighten your motivation level. Think of what happens when you achieved the goals you have set for yourself. Instead of thinking what happens if you score badly, think of what happens if you score excellent results. Live in that thought, and feel it.

Start Small

Before tackling bigger tasks, solve the smaller ones. This will make you more confident when faced with larger challenges. Stress caused by uncertainty can be avoided because you’re already so familiarised with tackling challenges.

Self-Talk

In all honesty, only you can motivate yourself. The best way is to talk to yourself. The answers are always within you, and you can always talk and wonder to yourself. Ask yourself questions. Give yourself verbal reminders. \n

Creativity

If you have set yourself a study goal, it doesn’t always have to be books and paper. \nYou can think of interesting ways to teach yourself to absorb new information. This will keep you interested and motivated to work towards your goals.

Reward Yourself

We’re all human after all, and even babies need a pacifier to stop crying. By rewarding yourself, you remind yourself that your current efforts are worth the trouble. This will keep your motivation level high.

Challenges in life come and go, but without motivation, we cannot find the strength or purpose to overcome that challenge. If you are one of those passive ones who refuse to face challenges, maybe it’s time for you to find some motivation!

For those who are constantly motivated, give some of that energy to people around you!
