Being a student is a lot more expensive than what most people envision it to be.

\n

\n

Having to study means not being able to work full-time. At the same time, studies cost us thousands of dollars a year (think textbooks, tuition, and more!) That makes it hard to manage, much less save money as a student.

\n

\n

The good news is there are many ways out there where students can spend less, and save more!

\n

\n

There are tons of amazing parties and all sorts of fun things to do in college, but after my first year in university, I lost interest in them. Without a steady stream of income, I am forced to rely on the limited funds from my parents every semester. Hence, I have to think of ways to reduce my spending while finding more opportunities to ensure that my savings are increasing.

\n

\n

One of the ways — rather common among my friends — would be to skip meals, which I would not recommend. Instead, I tried to cut back on entertainment expenses to save money. I would try to avoid movies and music concerts — sometimes choosing not to hang out with my friends as well. This really depends on how disciplined you are, and I feel that it also depends on the needs of every individual.

\n

\n

As a student, one of the most important things is to keep track of your expenses. Spend too much, and you risk accumulating too much debt after graduation. Some turn to part-time jobs while others resort to long-term plans. This article will teach you some simple money-saving tips to adopt while pursuing your education.

\n

\n

1. Set a budget

\n

\n

\"inserting

\n

\n

One of my mottos is: Don’t shop when you’re starving, manage your debt, & cut out unnecessary spending.

\n

\n

One of the most important tips that I would like to share is to set a budget and to stick strictly to it. What gets measured gets managed. If you keep track of all your expenditures, you will become more mindful of your purchases, and be more likely to start saving money.

\n

\n

Luckily, technology has made budgeting easy. We no longer need to spend hours over the dining table filling out spreadsheets. One of the apps that I use to track my expenditure is called Monny

\n

\n

\"Monny

\n

Source

\n

\n

You only need to occasionally review the numbers (I do it monthly) and add in the categories when you make any purchases, however small it is.

\n

\n

2. Buy second-hand goods or learn to trade and exchange with your friends

\n

\"carousell

\n

Source

\n

\n

Buying second-hand goods is a great way to save money as a student (think Carousell!) because prices are usually much lower as compared to brand new items. You may be surprised at the treasures you find – high quality clothes, used textbooks, home appliances if you are living in a hostel – all for a lower price.

\n

\n

If you were to keep track of the money that you’ve spent on your textbooks, you will come to realise that you are spending hundreds of dollars each semester! Instead of buying new textbooks, get them either on Carousell or on shared forums other students post on. You can easily save 50% – 80% off the original price, and if you are lucky, many of the second-hand textbooks are hardly used. The best thing is that after you are finished with them, sell them on the same site! Occasionally, you might be able to sell them for the same price (or more, if you are a great negotiator) than when you bought them.

\n

\n

3. Leave food shopping to later in the day

\n

\"groceries

\n

\n

Many supermarkets and bakeries have a clearance sale in the evenings where some food is sold at a marked-down price. Bread, seafood and dairy products will be on sale, and many vegetables, fruits and other fresh produce are labelled with a reduced price. These are great bargains for students if you cook on your own. Next time you go grocery shopping, try popping into the store a few hours before it closes and check out the prices. There is a massive difference!

\n

\n

4. Think carefully before getting a credit card

\n

\"credit

\n

\n

If you have a credit card, be disciplined. Many of us, myself included, are guilty of spending too much money on items that we already have or are completely unnecessary. Often enough, taking a credit or debit card out is the easiest way to pay for the bill without facing the reality of the price.

\n

\n

Many students are tempted by credit cards to buy now and pay later, but this bad habit may lead to overspending. Refrain from this method of paying unless you are disciplined enough to not go beyond your budget.

\n

\n

5. Remember your student perks

\n

\"students

\n

\n

Many people think having fun means spending lots of money on movies, parties, theme parks or other local attractions. Yet, there are many types of free entertainment available – it just requires a little extra effort to find! Consult the internet and start from websites like timeout.com, where you can search for all kinds of things to do free of charge. \nGeneral rule of thumb: It is always a good idea to ask if there’s a student discount before you pay for anything.

\n\n

\n

6. Save, Invest, Save

\n

\"stock

\n

\n

Learn to invest and start young. Younger investors have a tremendous advantage - time.

\n

\n

Investing a small amount of money today (on a regular basis) can lead to big returns down the road. Compound interest is advantageous when you give it enough time, and many students do not realize how much more money they will end up with if they start saving and investing now.

\n

\n

Below are some of the many ways you can look to explore and start out:

\n

\n

1. Regular share saving plans by banks (RSS)

\n

\n

On top of saving a percentage of your income, an RSS plan also invests that amount to help you grow your wealth. An RSS plan grows your wealth by investing in a financial instrument like an Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) that tracks — for example — the Straits Times Index (STI). This means that you are effectively investing in the top 30 companies in Singapore’s market without having to pick out individual stocks to buy.

\n

\n

2. Endowment Plans

\n

\n

Endowment plans are a common type of product that people often buy for investment purposes. They require you to continue a fixed sum throughout the lifespan of the plan. You may be required to pay every month, quarter, 6 months, or year. They run for a fixed amount of time, usually between three to twenty years.

\n

\n

The maturity period that is appropriate for you will depend on your goals and circumstances. When your endowment plan reaches maturity, you will be paid the returns of your investment. Many young people tend to regard endowment plans as “forced savings” plans, since they are required to make regular payments. \n

\n

\n

Remember: The earlier you start saving, the more amount of money you can save!

It started with the intention of helping people in need. I was like many other Singapore students, attending a school, and aiming to go to my dream school.

\n

\n

However, my student life was not as smooth as many other students. Back then, I always wondered why my friends could attend many enrichment classes such as tuition and music lessons. I was not that privileged to have such classes — not even tuition. Luckily, I managed to squeeze myself into the top 2nd class yearly of a reputable primary school in Singapore back then.

\n

\n

However, my command in English led me to have a hard time at school. I always had good grades for every subject, except for English, with a low Band 2 grade most of the time. The worst nightmare came, and it was my stringent P6 form teacher cum English teacher, who called my mother every single time I made a mistake in my English homework.

\n

\n

Yes, this may sound like I am exaggerating, but it is true.\nMy family was not well-to-do, and we did not have enough money for my tuition. However, my father struck a small windfall and had some spare cash for me to have my first tuition lesson in my life.

\n

\n

Luckily enough, I managed to land myself in my dream school. I had no chance to waste when I was in secondary school and fortunately, I was able to enter a local Junior College, followed by Singapore Management University School of Information Systems.

\n

\n

The Start of My Tutoring Journey

\n

\n

However, before I began my university journey, all Singaporean sons have to serve a compulsory 2 years National Service (NS), and this is how my tutoring journey began.

\n

\n

\n

After my Basic Military Training (BMT) in Pulau Tekong, I was having my own free time after office hours in my transport unit after I was posted out. I had to stay in camp, and I was either reading comics that I had borrowed from the library or surfing the internet. I remembered that my JC Mathematics teacher had told my class about an online forum that we can either post or answer Mathematics questions for free.

\n

\n

I decided to do something meaningful by swapping my position from a student to a tutor by guiding students who were seeking help on the forum. I was trying my best to not let any underprivileged students be deprived of a better education like me back then. I brought my unused pens and recycled papers to my army bunk for my online night “teaching”. This continued till I ended my NS and I had 8 months before the commencement of my university education.

\n

\n

Instead of finding a part-time job, I chose another meaningful path of becoming a physical tutor that charged cheaper rates to sustain some allowance for myself while doing some self-study to prepare for my university. However, the tuition tasks did not last for 2 months as there were only a few students and I was constantly rejected by parents for a simple reason — I was a male tutor.

\n

\n

I remembered an occasion where I had a discussion with a mother about tutoring her daughter for the rest of the year. We discussed over the phone for close to a week and it had seemed like everything would be confirmed. At the last moment, her husband asked if I am a male or female tutor. Shortly after, the deal was called off and I decided to shift my tuition services online.

\n

\n

Earning An Allowance through Tuition

\n

\n

I was hunting for online tuition web and mobile applications all over the internet to give it a shot. The first few applications allowed me to earn about $30 weekly. At the same time, I was still doing some free lessons for my juniors to update myself about the syllabus too. \nOne of the most important reasons to embark on online tuition was to earn a small allowance for me during my university days.

\n

\n

\n

University school fees are extremely expensive, and they still are. Most of my peers are earning their allowance through tutoring. This is due to the fact that we have limited free time and we would want to earn the most within that timeframe.\nHowever, being an online tutor is never easy. I have to keep up with the latest syllabus to ensure that my teaching is effective. \nBesides that, I have to train my patience when I am doing online tuition as well.

\n

\n

I’ve encountered individuals who would take advantage of an online platform to hurl profanities or to spam me with messages every few seconds. \nOne of the most common encounters include having a student will message me every few seconds asking, “Is it done?” almost immediately after asking the question.

\n

\n

Personally, I believe that these primary school students would not behave this way in front of their teachers physically as they are afraid of the consequences. However, these setbacks have never pulled me down as I believe that the online tuition platforms will punish the students accordingly.

\n

\n

Benefits of Being an Online Tutor

\n

\n

One of the greatest reasons I prefer online tutoring is being able to plan my own schedule. \nWith a hectic schedule in university, online tuition suits me better. Also, being an online tutor gives me the advantage of referring to the online resources that I have been gathering for years, which helps me to make my teaching sessions more efficient.

\n

\n

\n

At the end of the day, my efforts in delivering the best I can in every session have paid off. Students are coming back to ask me more questions and some have even personally requested for me to answer their questions. It is these actions by both students and parents that have kept me going on.

\n

\n

Even though I did not begin teaching with the goal of financially benefitting from it, I was lucky enough as it helped me to earn some allowance. I feel that recognition from online tuition platforms is as important as recognition from both students and parents too.

\n

\n

This is because it credits the deserving online tutors for the efforts they have put in, as well as allocating them for future opportunities. These are factors that make graduates continue teaching upon graduation.

\n

\n

Looking Ahead

\n

\n

Till now, I find it unbelievable that I am an online tutor. I would have never thought it was possible when I had my first and only tuition lesson at 12 years old. Then, online tuition was non-existent as internet bandwidth charges were expensive. \nHowever, even as technology advances, my passion and motto to teach tuition at a cheaper rate or free of charge towards underprivileged students has never changed.

\n

\n

I always believe in finding opportunities around me whenever I can. Being an online tutor gives me special opportunities that come together with technological advancements. I managed to conduct lessons via live streaming, educate students through a virtual whiteboard, and give tips for current students that go beyond their academics.

\n

\n

Being an online tutor has created many unexpected wonders in my life, and I hope that students will continue to appreciate their online tutors.

Snapask decided to stop being mysterious about our tutors, and thus came up with a newly designed tutor profile!

In the past, students could only see which university their tutors are from, average tutor’s rating and also the number of questions the tutor has answered.

Before, students experienced Snapask based on the trust they have on Snapask’s matching algorithms, but now, you can get to know your tutors better! Once a tutor has accepted your question, you can tap on his or her icon at the top - to reveal a whole new tutor profile!

There, you can see how many other students have added the particular tutor to their favourite lists, and also read students’ comments on the tutor! Compared to just being able to see the average star ratings, you can now gauge your tutors’ capabilities in-depth!

Through the comments, you can also get a glimpse on your tutor’s personality and style of teaching. Though the comments are purely students’ thoughts, the tutors can also use them to improve on their teaching style and thus improving Snapask’s quality of teaching.

We hope that every student can rate their tutors fairly after every session, to help other students in understanding their tutors and also to help us improve our services!

Want to play a part in establishing a tutor’s profile? Simply ask a question.
